About Ed Asmus
Architecture was my training. Photographing it became my calling.
45 years photographing architecture. Before that, I spent 11 years at two architectural firms, where I found my calling behind the camera.

I trained in Julius Shulman's workshops, and for the past 45 years I've photographed buildings for architects, builders and developers across California, from courthouses and churches to hospitals, offices and private homes.
The camera came out of my years at those two firms. The second one had clients who owned camera stores. They saw how interested I was in photography and encouraged me to build a darkroom. Their words were, “If you do well, we will do well.”
Because I've been on the design side, I know what an architect wants a photo to show: the idea behind the building, the materials, and how it meets its site. I scout before every shoot, plan around the sun, keep vertical lines straight, and come back at dusk when the building looks its best. The photos are made to work for award submissions, proposals, websites and print.
Over the years I've photographed projects for architects, interior designers, builders, developers, advertising agencies, product manufacturers and engineering firms.
I also taught photography at Sacramento State and UC Davis, and I'm a certified drone pilot, so I can add aerial views that show how a project sits on its site.
I'm based in Sacramento and work throughout California.

A few sentences about the project and how the shoot went helps other architects, designers and builders find the right photographer.
